And a Happy New Year...

Is anyone doing a summary of the year just ended?

Hey

I would have, but honestly I have not had the time. I'm now two years behind. :)

I'm still trying to cobble together some kind of "state of the nation" report about where things actually are with regards to scammers online. Email has long ago fallen out of favor as a means of garnering "new leads." Now it's all twitter and (bogus, broken) SEO.

Merry Christmas all.

(I also would be interested in a year end summary.)

Hey all. Belated Merry Xmas. (Heh. Someone revived my year-old greeting. Thanks!)

I haven't done a year end synopsis in a while. It would take me a bit to do now because I haven't logged the same way I used to.

Also: there haven't been as many spam-related security happenings as much as there have been larger security-related ones, i.e.: Sony hack, Playstation / Xbox DDOS, "the fappening" (celebrity image leaks), bitcoin ripoffs and other large-scale, high visibility hacks like the Target credit card breach. I could still itemize those, but I think you could read a synopsis of those at most major news outlets - a vastly different occurrence than in years previous, which is why I created those year-end logs in the first place (major news media was not focusing on any of what we cover before.)

Some examples:

http://simplicity.laserfiche.com/conten ... ories-2014
http://cw33.com/2014/12/29/hacked-2014- ... he-hacker/

My suggestion for a story that was mostly covered only by the security press - and in this case it was a particularly obscure story too - was this one about the CryptoRush bitcoin scammer:

https://bitcomsec.true.io/bitcomsec/tra ... rush-hack/

Worth a read if you hadn't seen it previously.

But my point is: not much really appears to have happened when it comes to spam-related criminal activity specifically. I'm happy to be incorrect if something has, but I just haven't seen any major activity against any spam-related crime in several years now.

Happy Holidays!
