FBI arrests dozens for 'phishing' ID theft scheme

LOS ANGELES — The FBI is making dozens of arrests in the U.S. and overseas to crack an identity theft ring that victimized thousands of people.

Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman in Los Angeles, says agents are making arrests Wednesday morning in Southern California, Nevada, North Carolina and overseas.

She says about 100 arrests are expected — many of them in the Los Angeles area

It sounds like an operation we're all very familiar with, that was sending spam for Bank of America and Wells Fargo. They enlisted people in financial difficulty as money mules, too.

More details emerge as this story grows legs: 390 results in Google news this evening at 21:00 ET. This Wired article has links to the names, ages and location of the criminals and also the indictment.

And why not make this forum public even for guest users? I don't think it would harm anybody to see all these a**holes getting busted sooner or later. :twisted:

It's public to the search engines. If a user clicks on the link from google they'll be told to register. I like that idea.

Since this general area (cybercrime) is locked from unregistered users, this forum inherits the same permissions. If we want the whole area to be wide open I can do that. Let me know.

That part I believe: by default, yes they can. I don't know if there's a way of preventing that.

Actually, I just looked at some Google results. The only forums being indexed are 1, 5, 9 and 12. (Fight Spammers, Spam in the News, Stupid...Spammers, and Unrelated to Spam).
