Get e-mails with my address as the sender

Postby Polydeukes » Mon Feb 01, 2016 1:53 pm

Hi Everybody,

I'm Michael from Germany
Sorry, when I didn't look to all the existing topics due to so much subjects and recommendations.

I get a few times per week an E-Mail with my E-Mail Address as the sender. Every mail contains only one link:
The subject is:
*SPAM* 24/7 PHARMACY or somthing else in this area

I already changed my E-Mail provider password. But it doesn't stop.
Does it mean that they hacked my E-Mail account? Or are they able to send someone a message and the guy who receive the message see hiself as the sender? I am at my wit's end. Can someone tell me what to do that it ends?

Thanks for your help in advance.

More likely than not, the email was not transmitted from your own email account. The "FROM" line of an email message is easy to forge and spammers typically forge your name in an attempt to fool your email provider's spam filters. The full message header (from the "raw" email message) needs to be inspected to give you a better idea of its true origin. Your email service provider or your "email reader" program should have instructions about how to obtain the full headers or perhaps the entire raw message.

Typically when the SUBJECT line begins "*SPAM* ...", the spam filters weren't fooled and automatically inserted that word as a warning.

This spam technique has been widely discussed on the web for many years.

Welcome, Polydeukes!

Depending on how you filter your email, you may be able to identify these fairly easily. For instance, you can set your email program to automatically include a meaningless string of characters in the "organization" line of your outgoing emails. If the incoming email is "from" you but doesn't include the string in the headers, it's spam. Or if you always mail from a particular IP address, you can filter for emails that don't include it. Outlook won't let you do much, but programs like Mailwasher are pretty powerful at filtering for things like "if A and not (B or C)".
